Our environmental program in the framework of the Comenius project Sustainable School Indicators focused on using recyclable material for craftwork and was titled ?RETHINK, REUSE, ?..RE-CREATE? . Through the program, the participating students reused recyclable material giving them a second life. In addition, they developed their environmental awareness and sense of personal responsibility for the salvation of our planet.

We used the Press and the Internet to look up information. At the same time the program had an interdisciplinary character as it was connected to Modern Greek (using bibliography codes), Mathematics, for calculations and geometrical shapes and Art , for the artistic expression of the creative transformation of recyclable materials.

The group comprised of A and B class students and took place after the end of schools hours every Thursday. All the students were eager to participate despite their hectic and busy schedule.

We consider this project a success story because apart from its cognitive and emotional goals, it also achieved psychomotor goals as the students learnt to cooperate and work in groups, developed designing skills and basic construction skills and their creativity and imagination were boosted.

Our project affected the whole school community as many students showed interest in creating things from recyclable materials although they weren?t part of the group in the first place. Others offered to help if and when necessary. Many teachers also helped either by collecting recyclable material or by sharing their ideas with us or by creating things themselves or by helping our students.

Regarding the financial cost of the project, this was minimal as it was limited to buying only writing material.

Finally, this activity can continue next school year as recycling should be part of our daily life. Young people are the future of our society and we have to, as a school, encourage them to reduce their ecological footprint on the planet.
