The International UNESCO Seminar on Climate Change took place in the headquarters of the organization in Paris on the 7th and 8th December 2015. Directors and teachers from schools participating in the UNESCO Associated School Project Network from Japan, Indonesia, India, Lebanon, Greece, Morocco, France, Germany, Denmark, Canada, Equator, Colombia and Brazil participated in the two-day seminar.Three Greek school Directors, from Ralleio Lykeio, Genadeio Lykeio and 2nd Lykeio of Gerakas, and two teachers, from the Athens College of Hellenic-American Educational Foundation and the Thessaloninki Hellenic College.

Innovative programs and good practices regarding climate change from the participating countries constituted the core of the discussions in the seminar. The Director of Ralleio Lykeio Dr Dimitris Kalaitzidis presented the activities of our school within the Sustainable School framework with special mention to the activity of collecting used frying oil which continues at the school for the second school year.

Here are some useful conclusion:

  • The Whole School Approach concept has become a central theme in the UNESCO International Action Program regarding Education for Sustainable Development.
  • Unconnected Environmental Education programs within the same school is now considered a thing of the past, however it is still common practice in most of the countries that took part in the International Seminar.
  • The Greek Ministry of Education seems to be ambivalent, as on the one hand it includes the concepts of Sustainability and Whole School Approach in its annual directives but on the other, it has not changed anything in the actual management of the new concept, that is Education for Sustainable Development. This new educational concept introduces more holistic and participatory approaches of the various issues at school.
  • The Sustainable School Approach based on the set of Sustainable School Indicators is an adequate and efficient strategy for the achievement of the goals of Education for Sustainability as it combines the Whole School Approach, orientation, motivation and praise of schools which reorient their daily function towards Sustainability.
