As globalization of the financial crisis threatens even the most developed countries, mankind looks anxiously for a type of development that will enable citizens to enjoy a decent standard of living, while not destroying the life-support ecosystems that make life on Earth viable and sustainable. The project aims to introduce the concept of sustainability and the principles of sustainable development which entail shifting the school focus towards sustainability through specific changes in the educational, social, organizational and environmental domains of school life. This focus shift is driven by the introduction of a set of "Sustainable School Indicators? as well as by the adoption of the concept of the "whole school approach?. This approach is the main pillar of changing the school towards sustainability as it involves all the parameters of school life in the common effort towards a ?sustainable school?.

The first year of the project will be devoted to preparing the partner schools (headmaster, teachers, pupils, students, parents, local community) in order for them to incorporate the "Sustainable School" curriculum from the very beginning of the second year of the project.

The project will be evaluated in a comprehensive and efficient way both at the end of the first year (formative evaluation) and at the end of the second year (final evaluation). The primary end product will be a set of "Sustainable School Indicators" that will result from the pilot phase and the full implementation phase of the project. Further on, the practices of «sustainable school» will be applied in partner schools, which will act as pilot schools for the introduction of the ?Sustainable School Concept? in their countries. This project is innovative because the use of "Sustainable School Indicators? allows for the well-planned, scientifically based application of the principles of sustainable development by schools in an effort to improve their daily function in a holistic way ranging from the applied pedagogical approaches and teaching methodologies to the administration style, the relations of the school with the local community and the school?s ecological footprint, ensuring at the same time the participation of all the members of the school community.
